Hey Chuck! The mystery of this picture has been partially solved. I have really dug up a lot of information to try to identify this picture.

As stated previously, it is definitely between 1957 and 1960. The Reds were known as the Redlegs during 1957 and 1958 so this photograph cannot be from either one of those years. Also, the demolition of the buildings had begun because you can see a car to the right of the scoreboard. I looked at WLW9 because we know that game is definitely from 1959. After looking at the ad in this picture, Kroger did advertise in 1959 but the advertisement is different in this photograph. Also both of the signs at the top of the scoreboard are different in both of these pictures. I have no clue if the Reds changed advertisements during the season. Now it is customary to have ads moved around during the season but things were different 40 years ago.

I have to believe that this game is from 1960 because the laundry was gone in 1961. You are not going to believe this but my wife is an engineer and a car enthusiast. I got her involved in this because of the ad to the left of the clock. It is a Pontiac ad and states that it is the "only car with wide track wheels". Pontiac began introducing the wide track wheels in 1959. The picture on the Pontiac ad is a 1960 Bonneville because the 1959 had a "split grill".

I reviewed all of the box scores of all of the games between the Giants and Reds at Crosley in 1959 and 1960. The only time that the lineup on the scoreboard appeared on a box score was on August 10, 1960. During all of the games in 1960 against the Reds, the lineup was identical except on this particular night. In the other games, the catcher batted in the seventh spot and the shortstop in the eighth spot. On this night, it was reversed. The Reds lineup matches perfectly.

However the 36 on the scoreboard as the Giants' pitcher is a huge problem because that is the only thing that does not match up in the box score. I have a theory but it is far fetched. Sam Jones was the starting pitcher for the Giants on this night. Sherman Jones was a relief pitcher for the Giants and wore number 36. I wonder if the scoreboard operator accidentially put the wrong number on the scoreboard prior to the game. I wonder if the lineup card has S. Jones on it and the operator put Sherman Jones' number on the scoreboard. That is the only explanation that I can offer.

This game has to be in 1959 or 1960...it cannot be any other years because of the scoreboard, the laundry, the demolition, etc. The box scores in 1959 are not even close to the lineup on the scoreboard so it is definitely not 1959. In reviewing everything, this has to be the game...it is just impossible for it to be any other time. Furthermore the other games played on this night match also. If you notice in the pic, there are a lot of empty seats and the attendance for this game was 9,965. I think this picture was taken on August 10, 1960 just prior to the game. It just has to be the correct game because of all of the above factors. Everything matches but the "36" on the mound for the Giants.

Thanks, Ron
