Chuck, this photo is definitely from 1961. I definitely know that it is from opening day in 1961. Here is my theory. With the exception of the uniform number between 48 and and 6 which I am unable to ascertain, I have located all of these uniform numbers on the 1961 Reds. There are 24 players that are pictured so therefore one player is not shown. The other years during this time, all of these uniform numbers were not issued.

I looked at the rosters that were in the 1961 World Series and both Jay Hook (47) nor Pete Whisenant (27) did not participate in that World Series so I do no think that this would be from the Series. Furthermore Elio Chacon (17) and Bob Purkey (37) participated in the 1961 World Series but neither of their uniform numbers are represented in this photograph which is further evidence. Also in looking at the field, it appears to be in great shape. There is no evidence of the field being burned out like it would probably be in October.

The players are Ken Johnson (40); Bill Henry (44); Jerry Lynch (24); Wally Post (29); Jim Brosnan (42); Vada Pinson (28); Frank Robinson (20); Gus Bell (25); Ken Hunt (41); Darrell Johnson (9); Jim Maloney (46); Sherman Jones (34); Leo Cardenas (16); Johnny Edwards (6); Jay Hook (47); Gordy Coleman (18); Pete Whisenant (27); Joey Jay (30); Eddie Kasko (10); Dick Gernert (15); Gene Freese (12); Jim O'Toole (31); and Don Blasingame (19).

Now we have two identifications for this photo... my isn't life interesting...

"I have to take exception to the photo in the 4th row on the left. It is not opening day 1961. Ron Martin did outstanding research but he should have learned that this photo is of the 3rd game of the 1961 World Series. Bob Purkey #37 is not pictured because he was in the bullpen warming up as he was the starting pitcher. Pete Whisenant#27 is there because Hutch had taken him off the active roster and made him a bench coach. Hook#47 didn't get in the Series or it would have been even worse. He was only used 3 times in August, 2 in September, and last on October 1, against the Pirates.

Also Edwards, Gernert, Blasingame, D. Johnson, and Sherman Jones were not on the team on opening day.

Mr. Martin also identifes the picture in the 5th row on the left as opening day, 1961. There is no bunting in that picture as there is in the World Series picture in row 4.

The reason I know all this about 1961 is Jim Brosnan's book, "Pennant Race" which I've read at least ten times.

Brad Coffman"

Well... I'll post here the final outcome of this difference of opinion.... when it is all ironed out.

I just heard back from Ron, and he agrees that Brad is right about this photo. This is the third game of the 1961 World Series!
