May 2, 1959

Cincinnati Reds fan, Ron Martin, took it upon himself to do some detective work to identify the game and players in the photo below. Here are his conclusions...

" I have also figured out photo WLW 9. It is another photo from the game on May 2, 1959. The scoreboard in this photo coincides with the scoreboard in WLW 7.

The Reds scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning and added seven more in the bottom of the fourth inning. All of the data from the other games is the same too.

The photo is taken in the top of the sixth inning. According to the scoreboard, Willard Schmidt is still on the mound and Duke Snider is at the plate with two outs. I think that is Vada Pinson in left field. I cannot really tell exactly by the scoreboard."

And the following information has been provided by Brad Coffman:

"I was looking at the WLW photos. #s 6 & 9 were taken at a game on May 2, 1959 in a game against LA. Ron Martin has done a very good job of supplying info about those photos. I'm sure the player in #9 is Robinson playing LF. Snider was lefthanded and Pinson would have been in right-center with Robby pulled over to the right by the scoreboard. The scorecard from the game at Baseball Almanac has Robby in LF and Pinson in CF. Of note are the facts that the Reds won 16-4 and Robinson became the 6th Red to hit for the cycle and the first to hit for a "natural cycle". In 1989 Eric Davis became the 7th and his was also natural. In photo #6 the batter is Pinson as Mr Martin suspects. He did hit 2nd that day with Robbie hitting 3rd."
